Flt 1 to Memory Lane Now Departing... Fasten Your Seat Belts!
Do you have fond memories of Santa Catalina Island and want to find some "reminders" of this beautiful island? Catalina Mayer offers you a variety of "Things Catalina", items unique to and about Catalina Island. Located off the Southern California shore, not far from L.A., yet it's like another world! Often referred to as the "Magic Isle" because of how detached it seems from the hustle and bustle of the mainland. Truly an amazing place, one in which it's easy to think you're on the Mediterranean! We hope you enjoy browsing the items available here today. Be sure to read the memories posted by other visitors and we encourage you to leave one of your own. Now, go ahead, and take a trip down memory lane, to remember and relive your own experiences on Catalina Island!
Postcards: Some Used, Some Not
Did you bring your list of all the people you wanted to send postcards to the last time you visited? Did you send a card to everyone? But you probably didn't send one to yourself, did you! Here's the easiest way to correct that!
Photos: Some New, Some Old
Did you get back from your trip, and after you had your film developed, you found out that you didn't have all or the best views you wish you had? Maybe you can find something here to complete your photo album!
Seaplanes: Grumman Goose & Sikorsky VS-44A
Do you remember seeing either of these wonderful old planes landing and taking off in Avalon? Or perhaps you even had the exciting experience of being IN them when they skipped across the waves! Do you remember how the roar of the engines on take-off was deafening? And how it sounded like you were landing on concrete as you first touched down on the water? Then you'll especially enjoy browsing the Seaplane Pictures & Postcards sections!
Ships: S.S. Catalina, Phoenix, Blanche W & More
Have you ever had the pleasure of cruising to Avalon aboard the Great White Steamer, the S.S. Catalina? Or maybe you took the glass bottom boats (the Phoenix, Princess or Nautilus to name a few) to view the UnderSea Grotto in Lover's Cove. Have you ever gone out to see the seals at Seal Rocks, or taken the flying fish trip? Then you've been on the Blanche W! Here are some of the long gone and also those still around! Check out the Ships & Boats page.
The Great White Steamer, S.S. Catalina, needs your help to survive. Please take a few minutes to read the SAVE THE CATALINA page and get involved. Time is running out and YOU can make a difference!
Books, Magazines & Other Printed Material
Looking for a book on Catalina? Or perhaps you're interested in something vintage. Whether you want a new book or just something from the past, perhaps you can find something of interest on our Book Page. It changes as we discover treasures worth looking at. Check it out!
Odds and Ends
Not sure what you're looking for? Well we have things that we're not sure how to classify! And generally speaking, these are items that we don't have enough of to have their own page. We call it our This and That! These aren't minor, just unique!
Other Seaplanes: Grumman, Sikorsky & Boeing
Perhaps you had the chance to fly on another airline. Same types of planes have flown for many airlines. Do you have memories of the great Clippers of Pan American? Or perhaps you flew on Chalk's, the oldest airline in the U.S., that until recently flew Grumman Mallard seaplanes between Florida and the Bahamas. Even if you're just a fan of seaplanes, check out our Other Seaplane or Chalk's photos and postcards!
Sikorsky Aviation
We've come across a gold mine of so many Sikorsky related items, that we figure they need a page of their own! While those familiar to Catalina's past know of the Sikorsky connection through his seaplanes, like the S-43 amphibian or the VS-44A flying boat (see picture below), most people think of helicopters. With exclusive access to the Sikorsky Archives, we've been able to dig through them to find some real gems. Most of these you won't find ANYWHERE ELSE! This page is for the good old-fashioned aviation buff, whether plane or helicopter.
Memory Board
Does ANY of this bring back memories for you? Why not share them! Here's your chance to leave your mark, but no novels, please! Just write a short note on our Contact Us page and we'll post your note. Go ahead, don't be afraid, make our day!
